Testing Remote Desktop connectivity


Overview

Wärtsilä Simulation Cloud Services are cloud-hosted virtual environments which are reachable via Internet. Users access these virtual environments using the Microsoft Remote Desktop client (software application). This manual describes how user can test whether a computer and underlying network infrastructure is configured correctly to allow remote desktop client to work with these virtual environments. In order to test connectivity Wärtsilä provides a dedicated cloud-hosted virtual machine to which the user will connect.

Important notes

  1. This test will only verify that computer and network are configured correctly for remote desktop client to work with the infrastructure used for Wärtsilä Simulation Cloud Services.
  2. During this test user will be connecting to test-only virtual machine which is different from the virtual machines used for the conducting trainings in Wärtsilä Simulation Cloud Services.
  3. User has to perform this test with the computer and network that will be used for the further connect to the Wärtsilä Simulation Cloud Services. If computer or network changes, then user has to perform this test again to verify connectivity.
  4. To perform this test as well as for the further work with Wärtsilä Simulation Cloud Services user should have Microsoft Remote Desktop client installed on his computer (to verify, type mstsc at a Command Prompt window). If no Microsoft Windows operating system is installed on the user’s computer, then appropriate Remote Desktop client must be downloaded and installed.
  5. The screenshots provided below may be different from the screens on the user’s machine, but the steps should be the same.

Test procedure

  1. Download connection file on the computer:

    Download RDP connection file
  2. Double click on the saved SimCloudTest.rdp file to open the Remote Desktop Connection The security warning window may appear – click Connect button
  3. Credentials will be prompted, enter password SimTest!PSWD
  4. Another security warning window may appear – click Yes button
  5. Computer will attempt to connect to the virtual machine
  6. If the connection was successful, the below message appears on the screen
  7. To confirm the quality of connection, pay attention to the indicator in the caption of the screen. At least two solid bars should be displayed.
  8. Please log off from the virtual machine by clicking Start button (Windows logo) and selecting Log off or window will be closed automatically in 45 seconds after connection.
